WHO YOU’RE CALLING

I started this company with an old truck and old tools.

That was 2003. The truck is gone. The number is still mine.

Nobody handed us a steel company.

I’m Jorge Mayen. I started More Steel in 2003. At the time I had an old truck, old tools and a lot more desire to work than actual work.

For probably the first three or four years, it was tough. There weren’t enough jobs. You take what comes in, do the best work you can and hope the person calls you again.

Then a shopping center called me about some fence work. We took care of it. They called again. Then other people started knowing our name.

Eventually I started working with a steel fabrication company, and that opened another door. More contractors started seeing our work. Then they started calling us directly.

That’s really how More Steel grew. One job. Then another one from the same person. Then somebody they knew.

Twenty-three years later, that’s still the business I want.

I don’t want somebody to use More Steel once because we had the lowest number on a spreadsheet. I want the superintendent to save my phone number. I want the PM to call us again on the next project. I want the GC to know that when our steel package gets complicated, we’re going to answer the phone.

Construction has problems. Everybody reading this website already knows that. Something in the field doesn’t match the drawing. Concrete is off. A dimension changed. Another trade installed something differently. Our piece doesn’t fit. Whatever it is.

Sometimes the problem is ours. Sometimes it isn’t. What I don’t like is standing around wasting half a day talking about whose fault it is while the project isn’t moving.

If we’ve seen something similar before and I think there’s a way to fix it, we’re going to tell you. The engineer still makes the engineering decision. The GC still makes the project decision. But I want More Steel to bring something useful to the conversation.

That’s probably the biggest thing I’ve learned since 2003. Doing your scope isn’t always enough to become the company people call again. You have to help finish the job.

WHAT I EXPECT FROM OUR CREW

Do the work. Answer the phone. Help finish the job.

Tell them

If something doesn’t look right, say something. I’d rather have an uncomfortable conversation early than a much more expensive conversation after steel has already been fabricated.

Bring an idea with the problem

Don’t just walk into the trailer and announce that something doesn’t work. If you’ve seen a possible way around it, bring that too. Maybe the engineer approves it. Maybe they don’t. Either way, you’ve helped move the conversation forward.

Finish your work

The project doesn’t care that we installed 95% of our package. If the superintendent still has More Steel highlighted on the punch list, our job isn’t finished.

THE SHOP

Where the pieces get built.

We fabricate our own work. That’s why we can stand behind the fit, and it’s why a change can get cut and welded the same day instead of ordered and waited on.

HAVE SOMETHING BIDDING?

Send Jorge the drawings.

Don't clean them up for us. Send the set, mark up what you're carrying and tell us when you need steel. We'll go through it and let you know what questions we have.
